A study published in the Biomedicines examined how Natural anti-F(ab)2 autoantibodies (NAAbs) affect self-recognition processes in autistic individuals.

In this study, 60 Caucasian children (38 males and 22 females) with autism who had no prior history of encephalopathy or neuroendocrine disorders were examined. 112 normally developing (TD) controls of which 72 males and 40 females were also taken into account. Age, sex, and pubertal state were comparable for both groups.

The age-appropriate Wechsler intelligence scale and Kaufman K-ABC tests were used to assess the cognitive functioning of ASD youngsters. To measure NAAbs levels, participants′ blood samples were taken.

Results showed that children with autism had considerably lower serum levels of IgG anti-F(ab)2 autoantibodies than children in the control group. These levels were adversely correlated with the severity of the autism. Also, in the autism group, IgG anti-F(ab)2 levels were strongly and inversely linked with IQ scores. Autoantibody concentrations were, therefore, more distinctive for autism than for intellectual impairment. The results of the current investigation also showed a connection between low IgG levels and severe autistic characteristics.

Given how naturally occurring IgG anti-F(ab)2 autoantibodies work in relation to self-recognition, the results of the present investigation suggest that deficient autoreactivity in autism results in a failure in the immune system′s capacity to distinguish between self and non-self. The association between autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) and major histocompatibility complex (MHC) genes also supports an autoimmune cause of autism.

These results are consistent with an immunological process in autism, which could cause ADS if self-recognition pathways are not functioning properly. This discovery raises the prospect of new treatments for severe autism in the future.
