The Prime Minister on Wednesday said that the nation is proud of the skill and inventiveness of its medical professionals, as he praised the efforts of the team of physicians at AIIMS Delhi who completed a successful uncommon treatment on a grape-sized fetus′s heart in 90 seconds.

As previously reported, AIIMS Delhi successfully balloon-dilated a grape-sized baby′s heart while still inside its mother.

A 28-year-old pregnant lady was admitted to the hospital who was pregnant but had already suffered three miscarriages. Parents expressed a willingness to continue the current pregnancy after learning about their child′s heart condition and receiving their approval for the recommended treatment.

AIIMS’s Cardiothoracic Sciences Centre handled the procedure which was successfully finished by the interventional cardiologists and fetal medicine specialists.

According to the medical team from AIIMS′s Department of Cardiology & Cardiac Anesthesia and Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology (Fetal Medicine), the fetus and the mother are both recovering well from the treatment. The medical specialists are keeping an eye on the development of the heart chambers to decide how to handle the kid in future eventually.

They said that it is possible to diagnose some serious heart diseases while the baby is still inside the mother’s womb. Sometimes, taking care of them while the baby is still in the womb might enhance the infant′s prospects after delivery and result in almost normal development. It is known as balloon dilation of an obstruction in the baby′s heart valve.

A senior physician from the Cardiothoracic Sciences Center team at AIIMS stated that the treatment is carried out under ultrasound guidance; with extreme caution because there is a chance that the fetus′ life may be at risk and that they successfully finished the process in about 90 seconds.
