At the 36th Annual Conference of the Lucknow Obstetricians and Gynecologists Society (LOGS) and Gynecology Academic Welfare Association on Friday, Prof. Rekha Sachan, a professor in the department of obstetrics and gynecology at KGMU, stated that every month, on average, 60 individuals with failed attempts to end the pregnancy are admitted to the gynecology department of King Georges Medical University.

The majority of them are single girls, especially teens, who, out of concern for their reputation, choose to use unlicensed paramedics or purchase over-the-counter abortion drugs. According to Prof. Sachan, many teenagers attempt self-abortion because they are afraid of what others and their doctors will think of them. They use over-the-counter contraceptives or consult unlicensed quacks or midwives.

Dr. Chandravati, the chair of the conference, stated that unsafe abortion attempts not only result in immediate harm to physical health but also put about 10% of women who have them at risk of infertility due to infection, injury to the fallopian tubes, or other consequences. She added that six out of ten (61%) of all unwanted pregnancies and three out of ten (29%) of all pregnancies result in unsafe abortions.

She explained that all women and underage girls should be aware that they have a protected right to an abortion from a licensed medical professional up to 20 weeks into their pregnancy. Thus, there is no need for unsafe pregnancy termination because it is the sixth leading cause of mortality in women.
