According to a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine, an artificial pancreas created at the University of Virginia Center for Diabetes Technologies improved blood sugar management in children aged 2 to 6 with type 1 diabetes. The results of the study showed that, when compared to trial participants in the control group, who continued to rely on the strategies they were currently using to manage their blood sugar, those using the artificial pancreas spent roughly three more hours each day in their target blood sugar range.

The Control-IQ system, manufactured by Tandem Diabetes Care, is a diabetes management device that automatically monitors and regulates blood glucose. The artificial pancreas has an insulin pump that uses advanced control algorithms based on the persons glucose-monitoring information to adjust the insulin dose as needed.

In the study, 102 children between the ages of 2 and 6 were enrolled from three sites in the U.S., namely UVA, Stanford University, and the University of Colorado. All participants maintained their regular daily routines during the study. The findings of the study showed that, on average, the time participants using the artificial pancreas spent within their target blood glucose range was about 12% higher than that of participants in the control group.

They also observed an 18% rate of time in range during the overnight hours of 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. The researchers claimed that night-time blood glucose control is particularly important, as severe, unchecked hypoglycemia can lead to seizures, coma, or even death.
