Tuberculosis (TB) is commonly associated with the lungs, but it can also affect a woman`s reproductive health. However, timely intervention can improve treatment outcomes and help women conceive. On Wednesday, several health experts explained that female genital tuberculosis (FGTB) is commonly seen in women and requires prompt medical attention.

FGTB is caused by Mycobacterium and is usually secondary to TB of the lungs or other organs. Dr Surabhi Siddhartha, Consultant Obstetrician & Gynecologist, Motherhood Hospital, Mumbai, stated that FGTB is a bacterial infection, which is known to cause infertility in women. It can take a toll on the fallopian tubes, uterus, ovaries, cervix, and vagina.

She added that the fallopian tubes are affected in 90% of women suffering from FGTB, followed by the uterine endometrium in 70% of women and the ovaries in about 25% of women. It damages genital organs, which results in irregular menstruation and infertility. Female genital TB patients typically show no symptoms at all, especially in the beginning.

Dr. Siddhartha noted that if the fallopian tube is infected, the fertilized egg will fail to pass via the tube and reach its destination, which is the uterus. Hence, the woman will not be able to conceive.

India contributes to over 30% of the global TB burden, while 38% of TB deaths worldwide take place in India. Dr. Sulbha Arora, Clinical Director, Nova IVF Fertility, Mumbai, stated that TB can have severe consequences for women, especially during their reproductive years and during pregnancy. Women diagnosed with FGTB are treated with ATT (anti-tubercular treatment). She added that women with genital TB can conceive through assisted reproductive technologies (ART) like IVF with proper medication.
