Experts Hint at Spillover in a New Study on Origin of Covid Infection

A recent study revealed that the deadly Covid-19 originated in raccoon dogs from the Wuhan market in China. This study hinted that the pandemic was a result of a spillover from an animal. The findings of the study are posted on the scientific research repository Zenodo. The study conclusions were based on genetic data drawn from swabs taken in and around the Huanan Seafood Wholesale Market starting in January 2020.

The swabs were obtained at the beginning of 2020, after the market had been closed and all animal products removed after being connected to the COVID pandemic outbreak. According to some scholars, this supports the theory that the pandemic had an animal origin.

However, given that they did not discover a diseased animal, several researchers claimed that the analysis "fell short of definitive proof." According to Dr. Justin Kinney, a quantitative biologist at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory in New York, there is no data that links SARS-CoV-2 with the existence of any of the diseased animals.

At a recent news conference, Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO), stated that "these data do not provide a definitive solution to the question of how the epidemic began."
