On Thursday, Moderna Inc. announced that it had signed a licensing agreement and would invest $36 million in Generation Bio Co. to create genetic medicines that target the immune system and liver disease.

The drug maker also stated that Generation Bio will be given a $40 million cash payment upfront and milestone payments totaling an extra $1.8 billion.  According to the firms, the agreement gives Moderna access to Generation Bios proprietary DNA technology and drug delivery system to create medications that target the liver and immune cells.

Under the terms of the agreement, Moderna will cover all the costs of research and development. The premarket trading of Generation Bios shares was suspended.
