The findings, published in The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism, indicated that long-term osteoporosis therapies are associated with a decreased risk of mortality after a fracture.

Based on over 50,000 people in a Taiwanese database from 2009 to 2018, the findings reveal that alendronate/risedronate, denosumab, and zoledronic acid all result in a 17% to 22% decreased risk of death postfracture when compared to raloxifene and bazedoxifene.

The study included 46 729 participants, with an average age of 74.45 years and follow-up of 4.73 years. It was found that alendronate/risedronate and zoledronic acid resulted in considerably lower mortality in the total fracture group when compared to raloxifene and bazedoxifene. The hip, vertebral, and nonhip/nonvertebral fracture groups showed similar trends. In the subanalysis, subjects taking long-acting zoledronic acid had the lowest mortality regardless of gender or age beyond 65. Women had a lower chance of death than men.

Thus the study concluded that using osteoporotic medicine especially a long-acting regimen may reduce post fracture mortality.
