According to several experts, sleep deprivation is linked with decreased response and motor activity. It is also linked with several unfavorable health outcomes, such as decreased performance at work or school, slowed reaction time, an increased risk of accidents, mental health disorders like drug abuse, depression, and anxiety disorders, as well as complications during pregnancy and all-cause mortality.

Even though sleep deprivation can be reversed, the inability to concentrate at work or in school due to insomnia can lead to psychosocial issues, which can make it difficult to maintain interpersonal relationships. Moreover, slow response times raise the risk of fatalities, severe injuries, and disabilities that last a lifetime in the workplace, at home, and in traffic collisions.

Additionally, insomnia and drug misuse are both linked to mental illnesses. Individuals who struggle with persistent insomnia and drug use disorders may have "forgotten" how to fall asleep without the help of a sedative.

Furthermore, sleep deprivation increases the chance of developing chronic illnesses like cardiovascular disease and hypertension, as several studies have shown that the risk of developing coronary heart disease, an irregular heartbeat, and heart failure rises consistently with decreasing duration of sleep.

Similarly, the immunity of the body decreases with insufficient sleep, which can result in repeated infections and slow healing time. It increases the possibility of preterm birth, C-sections, more painful labor, depression linked to pregnancy, and low-birth-weight babies.

Sleep is essential for maintaining the optimum potential level of physical, immunological, mental, and cognitive functioning. According to a U.S. study, about 30% of participants revealed that they have difficulties getting adequate sleep.
