New Delhi: In accordance with a general exemption announcement, the central government has granted full exemption from basic customs tax to all imported foods and medicines for specific medical uses intended for treating all rare diseases mentioned in the National Strategy for Rare Disorders 2021.

A certificate from the District Medical Officer/Civil Surgeon of the district, the Central or State Director of Health Services, or both, must be shown by the individual importing the food items and medicines to qualify for the new exemption. While some types of life-saving pharmaceuticals and vaccines are subject to a concessional rate of 5% or nil, drugs, and medicines normally carry a basic customs charge of 10%.

Even though certain drugs, such as medicines used to treat Duchenne muscular dystrophy or spinal muscular atrophy, have previously received exemptions, the government has received several requests for customs tax relief for pharmaceuticals and treatments used to treat various uncommon diseases.

Some disorders demand expensive, imported medications or specialized diets that must be consumed. This exemption will save a lot of money while giving the sick much-needed relaxation. Pembrolizumab (Keytruda), used to treat several malignancies, has also been completely exempted from basic customs charges by the government.
