According to a study published in the Medical Mycology Case Reports, a plant mycologist from India has become the first person in the world to contract a plant fungal disease. According to reports, the 61-year-old had Chondrostereum purpureum, the fungus that causes silver leaf disease in plants. He was diagnosed with the illness in Kolkata.

Also, he had a paratracheal abscess in his neck. A fungus infection was discovered after analyzing the pus samples. Doctors revealed that the patient, a plant mycologist by training, spent a considerable amount of time conducting research using decomposing matter, mushrooms, and various plant fungi.

A human pathogen or commensal flora can be produced by fungi that can thrive in temperatures between 35 and 37 °C. The study authors, Dr. Soma Dutta, and Dr. Ujjwayini Ray, consultants at Apollo Multispecialty Hospitals in Kolkata, stated that the pathogen can infect people and is most likely to do so when they have impaired immune systems and injured skin or the respiratory tract.

The rose family is primarily targeted by the fungal plant pathogen Chondrostereum purpureum. The name of the disease is taken from the progressive silvering of leaves on affected branches. It is spread by airborne spores landing on freshly exposed sapwood. The disease is progressive and often results in death.
