On Friday, the European Medicines Agency announced that an expert committee has recommended extending the use of a weight-loss medication made by the Danish pharmaceutical company Novo Nordisk among teenagers 12 years of age and older.

The drug makers stated that the CHMPs favourable judgement was an "essential recognition of the unmet medical need among teenagers living with obesity and the need for additional therapeutic choices."

The medicine Wegovy from Novo Nordisk, a semaglutide-based drug, activates GLP-1, a hormone that causes the body to feel full after eating. It has received approval for the treatment of adult obesity in the United States and the European Union. After the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved the drug for use in this demographic in December, the American Academy of Paediatrics also advised the usage of weight-loss medications in children aged 12 years or older earlier this year.
