According to a new study published by researchers from Banaras Hindu University in Neuroendocrinology, sub-chronic psychological stress hampers male sexual potency and penile erection. Mr. Raghav Kumar Mishra of the department and his Ph.D. student, Mr. Anupam Yadav carried out the research to study sub-chronic psychological stress and its impact on male sexual potency and the physiology of penile erection.

Mr. Mishra explained that in recent years, a modified lifestyle, psychological stress, nutrition and diet, and metabolic disorders have significantly contributed to the increased rate of impotency. In the study, the test subjects were exposed to subchronic psychological stress for 1.5 to 3 hours every day for a period of 30 days. After exposure, the researchers measured the neuromodulators, hormones, and markers of sexual potency and penile erection.

The findings of the study showed that psychological stress reduced the circulatory level of gonadotropins and increased the stress hormone (corticosterone) levels, which had an adverse effect on the male hormone (testosterone). They explained that psychological stress alters the histomorphology of the penis by decreasing the smooth muscle/collagen ratio and increasing oxidative stress (an imbalance between harmful molecules and antioxidant enzymes) in penile tissue.

Lastly, it was concluded that psychological stress reduces the frequencies of mount, intromission, and ejaculation, whereas it prolongs the duration of sexual exhaustion by increasing the latencies of mount, intromission, and ejaculation.
