As there has been an increase in COVID-19 instances in India over the past few days, the health ministry has organized nationwide mock drills. These drills were intended to gauge hospital readiness. The Indian Medical Association asserts that a combination of factors, including a decline in testing rates, a new coronavirus infection type, and the relaxation of COVID-19 acceptable conduct, may be to blame for the recent COVID spike in our nation.

Coronavirus infections are being reported in large numbers in eight different Indian states, including Kerala, Maharashtra, and Delhi. The country has recorded 5,880 new reported COVID-19 cases in the last 24 hours, bringing the total number of active cases to 35199 on Monday.

According to epidemiologists, the number of COVID-19 infections in India is doubling every 4-5 days, and as a result, over 5,000 new cases are now being reported each day. They revealed that the current spike in cases is caused by the coronavirus strain XBB.1.16. However, it is believed that the infection is mild and has not resulted in an increase in the rate of hospitalization. This has been attributed to the evolution of hybrid immunity as a result of vaccination and unavoidable exposure to the illness.

Additionally, the health ministry advised that "the five-fold strategy, i.e., test-track-vaccination, should be followed with a continued focus on adequate and proactive testing as per guidelines, monitoring new and emerging clusters of new COVID-19 cases along with monitoring the trend of influenza-like illness (ILI) and SARI cases regularly for detecting early warning signals of the spread of infection. The agency also urged people to wear masks in crowded places and complete their vaccination doses.
