Experts suggest increase in liver disorders among Indians linked to increased alcohol abuse

Experts at the second edition of the India Liver Health Summit, held on Wednesday, said that alcohol misuse is the leading cause of liver problems in India and that frequent health check-ups and education about the significance of healthy livers are required to prevent binge drinking. 

 

According to Dr. S K Sarin, Professor and Chancellor of the Integrated Health and Wellbeing Council and the Institute of Liver and Biliary Science (ILBS Delhi), about half of the patients with liver diseases are alcoholics. He emphasized the importance of instilling an awareness of the adverse effects of alcohol usage beginning in infancy.

 

On the same day Play-Safe, a joint project of the IHW Council and ILBS was launched. The project aims to increase social and family support and knowledge to safeguard the liver against alcohol consumption, particularly among kids. The campaigns debut featured various speakers, including Noble Laureate Kailash Satyarthi, who emphasized the need to use children as ambassadors to motivate their family members to refrain from alcohol usage.

 

The unveiling was followed by a vow to encourage and raise awareness about the dangers of alcoholism among young people. The event was organized to celebrate World Liver Day, a globally recognized to raise awareness about the importance of a healthy liver and begin lifestyle adjustments to attain it.
