Study Reveals That Exposure to Green Environment in Early Childhood Does Not Protect Against Eczema

According to a Finnish study, greenery around the home in early childhood does not appear to protect children against atopic eczema. Instead, proximity to coniferous, mixed, and agricultural regions was linked to an increased incidence of eczema. The impact was particularly obvious for children born in the spring.

The presence of greenery in the home did not prevent children from developing eczema, contrary to our assumptions and the allergy-protective impact of natural interactions. It is most common in early childhood and is commonly connected with food allergies as well as the development of asthma and allergic rhinitis later in life. It is considered that urbanization and diminished biodiversity increase the incidence of allergy illnesses, although past study findings on the subject are inconsistent.

The current study included data from six Finnish birth cohorts, involving 5,085 children. The same children are followed up on from birth in a birth cohort, allowing researchers to explore connections between environmental early-life exposures and illness development before it starts. This study looked at the links between the season of birth, the greenness and kinds of land cover surrounding the early-life household, and the development of eczema by the age of two years.

The study highlighted that greenness is a crude measure of natures existence and a poor predictor of biodiversity. The researchers discovered that the predisposing effects of coniferous forests can impact the immune development of children. They also noted that the degree of development can vary based on the kind of nature and biodiversity, as well as the precise timing of the exposures.
