The latest epidemic of Hepatitis A was caused by massive sewage pollution of drinking water sources, according to health officials following a comprehensive assessment of the Amingaon region in north Guwahati, where four deaths occurred in the previous two weeks.

Many of the afflicted homes in Amingaon, according to health department authorities, do not have concrete barriers in the subterranean chambers connecting to their toilets to prevent sewage from polluting underground water and leaking into drinking water sources.

A team from Gauhati Medical College Hospital (GMCH) visited the region and filed a report to Kamrup DC Keerthi Jalli, informing her of the pollution in the water sources.

While an abandoned railway tank has quenched the thirst of hundreds of households in Loco, Hathat, and 26 No. Colony in Amingaon, where Hepatitis A has taken a lethal turn, sources say just a tiny number of them are railway employees families.
