On Monday, Ukrainian medical students demonstrated against the two-year internship program for international medical graduates. They accused the National Medical Commission (NMC) of discriminating against Indian medical students who must undergo a one-year internship.
The demonstration was held outside the headquarters of the National Medical Council of India in Bhopal. The NMC offers a 2-year obligatory rotating internship (CRMI) to foreign medical graduates (FMGs). Only after finishing the two-year CRMI will the FMGs be eligible for registration.
FMGs were unable to complete their training due to COVID-19 and the war between Russia and Ukraine. Last year, as a consolation, the NMC stated that final-year students who returned to India and got degrees from their universities on or before June 30, 2022, would be able to take the FMG test.
After qualifying, students will be expected to complete a CRMI for two years rather than just one. However, a case challenging the requirement for FMG internships is currently pending before the Supreme Court.
