On Wednesday, the chief of the World Health Organization revealed that the virus causing COVID-19 is here to stay, but the world is beginning to transition out of the emergency phase of the pandemic.

Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus announced at a press conference that in the upcoming week, the UN agency will issue guidance for nations on how to transition from an emergency reaction to long-term management of COVID-19.

He added that the global health agency is hopeful that it will be able to declare the end of COVID-19 as a public health emergency of international concern sometime in 2023. However, he also added that the virus is here to stay, and all countries must learn how to manage it alongside other infectious diseases.
