In a 29-year study published in the European Journal of Preventive Cardiology, researchers discovered that being physically active may reduce the chance of dying from cardiovascular disease in men with high blood pressure.

The study comprised of 2,280 males aged 42 to 61 years who were enrolled in the Kuopio Ischaemic Heart Disease Risk Factor Study in eastern Finland. Between 1984 and 1989, baseline measures were taken, and participants were followed up on until 2018.

There were 644 fatalities related to cardiovascular disease with a median follow-up of 29 years. The risk of death from cardiovascular disease was examined after adjusting for age, BMI, cholesterol levels, smoking status, and type 2 diabetes, use of antihypertensive, alcohol consumption, physical activity, socioeconomic status, coronary heart disease, and high sensitivity C - reactive protein, etc.

Participants were divided into four groups to assess the joint associations of blood pressure and fitness with the risk of cardiovascular death: normal blood pressure and high fitness, normal blood pressure and low fitness, high blood pressure and high fitness, and high blood pressure and low fitness.

Men with high blood pressure and low fitness had a risk of cardiovascular mortality that was more than double that of men with normal blood pressure and good fitness. When men with high blood pressure became physically active, their risk of cardiovascular disease remained the same but lessened. According to experts, this was the first study to look at the impact of exercise and blood pressure together on the risk of dying from cardiovascular disease.

This study concluded that high blood pressure was connected with a 39% greater risk of cardiovascular mortality, whereas inadequate fitness was associated with a 74% increased risk of cardiovascular death.
