According to reports, experts from the US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention are looking into an increase in uncommon and deadly brain abscesses in children in and around southern Nevada.

Last year, the number of brain abscesses in children in Nevada tripled, rising from four to five per year on average to 18. Doctors in other parts of the nation have also observed an increase in similar instances. Data from the Southern Nevada Health District showed that the median age of infected patients was 12, and 76% of them were male.

Harvard Medical School reported that such a brain abscess is a collection of pus in the brain tissue caused by a bacterial or fungal infection that commonly arises after surgery or a brain infection. Further Nevada Health Department, stated that the signs and symptoms of a brain abscess include fever, severe headache, nausea, vomiting, and seizures.

Dr. Taryn Bragg, an assistant professor at the University of Utah who handled the cases, stated that such a surge was exceptional and a significant increase after March of 2022.

Dr. Jessica Penney, a CDC Epidemic Intelligence Service officer assigned to the Southern Nevada Health District, researched the cases and discovered that none of the 18 afflicted children had previously undergone brain surgery or trauma. She provided information on the probe, which concluded in 2022.

The statement reports14 of the patients who went to the hospital needed surgery to empty the brain mass, 76% of the patients were diagnosed with sinusitis, and 26% were diagnosed with mastoiditis.
