The World Health Organisation (WHO) has shown concern and issued a warning about an increase in arbovirus infections globally. Cases have even been reported in colder places, which officials ascribe to the progress of climate change.

Dengue fever killed 1016 people in Brazil in 2022, the highest number in history. According to Ministry of Health epidemiological data, the virus has spread to southern Brazil, with three states - Paraná, Santa Catarina, and Rio Grande do Sul - rounding out the top five regarding documented dengue deaths. The fever is becoming more common in places further south on the continent, such as Bolivia, Peru, and Paraguay. WHO officials expressed worry about the Americas region because of arboviruses, citing disturbing trends in cases and mortality.

According to experts, there are two key reasons why this is crucial. Firstly, these are locations where the populace lacks protection [to the viruses that cause these diseases]. In other words, infection susceptibility was high. Second, healthcare systems needed to prepare to cope with the complexity that arose due to such a dramatic increase in the number of instances of these diseases.

Experts are also worried about Europes condition. The vector insects — Aedes aegypti (found in Brazil) and Aedes albopictus (found in Asia) — have been discovered there, with 24 nations reporting the presence of the vector mosquitoes and instances of dengue and chikungunya being recorded since 2010. Although no concrete data from Asia is available, the WHO believes the trend "seems alarming."

They emphasized that to prevent arbovirus-related mortality, people at a higher risk of acquiring severe infections should be identified as soon as possible.
