Mrs. Veena George, Health Minister of Kerala, has ordered an investigation into an incident in which an infant’s left hand was fractured during delivery, allegedly due to medical negligence at Neyyattinkara General Hospital. The minister also asked the director of health services to submit an urgent report on the incident.

The baby was born to Mr. Prajith (30) and Mrs. Kavya (22) on March 27, 2023. The couple claimed that no experienced doctors were present in the hospitals labour room during the birth. The couple revealed that after delivery, they noticed that the baby was unable to move his left hand, and they immediately alerted the doctors on duty.

Mr. Prajith revealed that an X-ray was taken on March 28, which confirmed the fracture diagnosis. He added that they were referred to SAT Hospital after the infant and new mother were discharged on March 30.

During evaluation in the medical SAT hospital, the doctors there found that the veins had also suffered a stretch due to the fracture. Later, the couple was referred to the Medical College Hospital, where the doctors promised that the injury would heal on its own in two weeks.

However, the couple decided to get a second opinion from an expert, who instructed them to start treatment immediately to avoid any further complications associated with the condition. The father of the newborn stated that the fracture in the left hand is cured, but the complications with the veins are still present.
