Researchers at the Institute of Life Sciences (ILS) in Bhubaneswar have found a novel strain of health-promoting probiotic bacteria that can aid in the prevention and treatment of a variety of health issues. The researchers found Ligilactobacillus salivarious F14 in the guts of tribal people in Odisha.

The discovery of the new strain was a major part of a research project on tribal health and nutrition started by the institute with the support of the Department of Biotechnology three years ago. As a part of this program, several researchers from the ILS are supervising different aspects of studies that can help improve the health and well-being of Odisha’s tribes.

According to a statement released by the ILS, probiotics are beneficial bacteria that give health advantages to people and animals when consumed in sufficient quantities. These beneficial microbes are recognized as advantageous in the prevention and control of a variety of health issues, such as diarrhea, obesity, and a variety of immunological diseases.

The bacteria were discovered by the team led by Mr. Shantibhusan Senapati. The team has identified and characterized the probiotic features of many bacteria. Recently, the group published the whole genome sequence and other probiotic properties of one of the helpful bacteria in the World Journal of Microbiology and Biotechnology.
