According to a study published in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology: In Practise, women who suffer from domestic abuse are at an increased risk of developing atopic diseases, including asthma. Domestic violence and abuse are worldwide problems that disproportionately affect women.

The retrospective study conducted in the UK showed that women with recorded exposure to domestic violence and abuse had a 52% increased risk of developing atopic diseases. In the study, the researchers looked at the history of womens exposure to domestic violence. Patients with a history of atopic conditions were excluded from the trial.

A total of 13,852 women were identified who had been exposed to domestic abuse, and their data was matched with that of 49,036 women who had not been exposed. The findings showed that atopic illness was detected in 967 women in the exposed group compared to 2,607 in the unexposed group.
