A study published in PLOS ONE by a University at Buffalo researcher discovered that T2D patients with porper chewing ability have lower blood glucose levels than those with decreased chewing function.

A retrospective study was performed on data from 94 T2D patients visited in an outpatient clinic in a hospital in Istanbul, Turkey. The first group of patients had good "occlusal function"--enough teeth that were properly positioned and made contact with one another to allow for effective meal chewing. The second groups blood glucose level was 9.42, which was more than 2% higher.

Chewing has been shown to activate responses in the gut that boost insulin secretion and the hypothalamus that promote a sensation of fullness, resulting in decreased food consumption. Eating less reduces ones chances of getting overweight, which is a key risk factor for having T2D.

Researchers hoped to improve public health by focusing on dental health and urging patients to keep a healthy weight, consume a healthy diet, and stop smoking. The data demonstrate that mastication has a substantial relationship with blood glucose management in T2D patients.

This investigation found no independent factors that might alter the patients blood glucose levels. One patients remarkable improvement demonstrated the potential advantage of increasing occlusal function with dental implants and proper fixed restoration. According to research, a 1% increase in blood glucose level is connected with a 40% increase in cardiovascular or ischemic heart disease mortality among diabetics. Other concerns include renal illness, eye damage, neuropathy, and poor wound healing.

Researchers are excited to conduct more research into possible causal links between occlusal support and blood glucose levels.
