The Indian Medical Association (IMA) called for a 24-hour state-wide strike on Wednesday in response to the death of a female doctor at Kottarakkara Taluk Hospital. The agency revealed that the intensive care units and emergency wings will be spared from the strike, which will last until 8 a.m. on Thursday.

Dr. Vandana Das (23), a house surgeon, was stabbed to death by an accused who was brought to the hospital for a medical check-up. The accused in the case, Mr. Sandeep, was a teacher. According to the reports, the accused stabbed the doctor with a pair of scissors he got from a nearby table.

Due to the violence against the doctor and her subsequent death, the doctors at the Kottarakkara Taluk Hospital decided to boycott medical services and stage a protest. Additionally, doctors at all ESI hospitals in the state have also called for a 24-hour strike under the Kerala Government Medical College Teachers Association (KGMCTA).

IMA state president, Dr. Sulphi, condemned the recurring attacks reported against doctors in Kerala and noted that such incidents lower the morale of doctors to work peacefully with confidence and a free spirit.
