On Tuesday, the National Medical Commission (NMC) issued a "one-time relaxation" order that allowed foreign medical graduates (FMGs) to complete their internship in India. The regulatory agency approved the list of 670 recognized non-teaching hospitals for the Compulsory Rotating Medical Internship (CRMI).

The circular issued by the medical regulatory body provides information regarding the mode and method of conducting medical internships for FMGs in India. The FMGs are required to complete an internship in India for a minimum term of 12 months in medical colleges or institutions approved for providing CRMI. As per the circular, all the state medical councils and directorates of medical education should ensure the implementation of guidelines while allocating medical colleges to FMGs.

According to NMC, the two-year internship clause is solely for the FMGs who were in their last year of medical school and returned to India owing to COVID-19, or the Russia-Ukraine War. The commission added that after completing their medical education, FMGs are required to qualify for the FMG Examination (FMGE) and subsequently undergo CRMI for two years.

They also added that if an FMG has already completed the first year of his or her internship at any medical college in India, he or she is free to complete the remaining part of his or her internship (2 years of internship) at another medical college in any state or UT. However, this will be dependent on the availability of seats in the hospital selected by the NMC for conducting internships for FMGs.
