Scientists from McMaster University discovered that Solriamfetol is the most effective treatment for excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) in those with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA).

The primary treatment for OSA is a positive airway pressure (PAP) mask. However, some patients still have excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) and may benefit from anti-fatigue medication. The research was published in Annals of Internal Medicine.

OSA affects 15 to 30% of persons in North America, and the frequency might be substantially greater because many more go misdiagnosed. Many people have EDS, which reduces their quality of life and puts them at risk of developing additional psychiatric problems. Physicians place a high value on improving this scenario.

The scientists conducted a systematic evaluation of 14 clinical trials of anti-fatigue drugs, including 3,085 patients, as well as a particular network meta-analysis using data from MEDLINE, CENTRAL, EMBASE, and ClinicalTrials.gov. From October 2022 to January 2023, they performed their research.

While Solriamfetol is likely the best prescription for EDS, the medications Armodafinil-Modafinil and Pitolisant are also useful in combating tiredness, according to scientists. Solriamfetol can also elevate blood pressure, which is very dangerous for persons with OSA because many of them also have cardiovascular problems.

Scientists are yet to explore how successful these anti-fatigue drugs would be in treating related conditions such as chronic fatigue syndrome and extended COVID since they had been shown to function for a comparable ailment.
