On Thursday, the World Health Organization determined that Mpox, formerly known as monkeypox, is no longer a global health emergency. Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of WHO, made the statement during a press conference on global concerns. In July of last year, Mpox was designated a public health emergency of worldwide significance due to a multi-country epidemic.

He stated that the Mpox emergency committee convened on Wednesday and advised that the multi-country Mpox epidemic no longer constituted a public health emergency of worldwide significance. However, Dr. Tedros stated that Mpox is still posing serious public health concerns that require a strong, aggressive, and long-term response, thereby emphasizing the fact that Mpox can still represent a threat.

He revealed that the agency has observed steady progress in limiting the outbreak based on the lessons learned from HIV prevention initiatives and by working closely with the most affected communities. He explained that the work of community organizations, in collaboration with public health authorities, has been critical for informing people about the risks of Mpox, encouraging and supporting behavior change, and advocating for access to tests, vaccines, and treatments in the susceptible population.

He also stated that over 90% of Mpox cases were recorded in the last three months, compared to the prior three months. So far, the WHO has documented around 87,000 cases and 140 fatalities. He also added that the WHO has been encouraged by the rapid response of countries.
