Researchers from Jadavpur University in Kolkata have discovered a new method to filter out microfibers and microplastics from drinking water. The researchers revealed that these contaminants, which can cause immense harm to human health, were present in the drinking water supplied in the city.

According to Dr. Prasanta Biswas, professor of food technology and biochemical engineering at JU, rapid sand filtration systems using fine grains of sand can remove nearly 90% of the microfibers and ultra-fine plastics.

Hence, he noted that by modifying the present sand filtration process in the treatment plants, nearly 90% of the microfibers can be removed by rapid sand filtration using 100-mesh sand. He also stated that this method can be used on a larger scale in treatment plants as it requires low maintenance costs and is economical.

Officials from the KMC water supply department stated that they are keen to learn more about microfibers or microplastic pollution in water and how to address it. An official from the KMC stated that if reducing the size of sand grains was proven to be beneficial, as indicated by the team of researchers from JU, then new systems would be added in the Palta water treatment facility to remove microplastics or microfibers. He also noted that special screens can also be fitted to remove microplastics from water.
