In a study published in the Journal of Infectious Diseases, researchers revealed that Mpox (formerly known as monkeypox) viruses can remain infectious for several days on surfaces in the household or hospital rooms.

For the study, the researchers applied the viruses to sanitized stainless steel plates. They also stored them at different temperatures, ranging from four degrees to 22 degrees, which roughly corresponds to room temperature, and at 37 degrees. They measured the amount of infectious virus after different time periods, ranging from 15 minutes to several days to weeks.

Regardless of temperature, the number of infectious viruses changed little in the first several days. The virus concentration at 22 and 37 degrees was reduced significantly only after 5 days. At 37 degrees, a virus without the capability to replicate was discovered after six to seven days. However, it took 10 to 11 days for the virus at 22 degrees to become incapable of replication.

At four degrees, the amount of virus began to decline dramatically after 20 days, and no risk of infection was observed after 30 days.

Additionally, when the researchers tested the effectiveness of five common disinfectants, they found that alcohol-based or aldehyde-based disinfectants reliably reduced the risk of infection. A hydrogen peroxide-based disinfectant, however, did not inactivate the virus effectively.
