The pharmaceutical sector has requested an exemption from the cap price for all low-cost formulations costing less than Rs 5 per unit. At a meeting on Tuesday, the sector advocacy group asked that the government remove formulations priced below Rs 10 per unit from the trade margin rationalize (TMR) application while agreeing to staggered implementation of TMR.

According to the Indian Pharmaceutical Alliance, which represents the countrys largest drug producers, and other advocacy organizations, low-cost formulations should be exempt from the price cap legislation. The Indian Drug Manufacturers Association, the Organization of Pharmaceutical Producers of India, which represents significant global pharma businesses, and Karnataka Drugs & Pharmaceutical Manufacturers, among others, have joined the alliance.

Under the Drugs (Price Control) Order, the National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority (NPPA) sets the ceiling pricing for essential medications under Schedule I.At a meeting on May 16, the government reopened discussions with industry stakeholders on TMR for medications and medical devices. In this respect, the Department of Pharmaceuticals and the NPPA convened a conference, inviting members of pharmaceutical organizations and medical device makers to attend and soliciting their feedback by Friday.

The Indian Pharmaceutical Alliance attended the meeting, Indian Drug Manufacturers Association, AdvaMed, and NATHEALTH, as well as industry groups such as ASSOCHAM, CII, FICCI, and PHDCCI.
