Taboo, Treatment and Technology are the Game changers for Burden of Infertility in India

In India, one out of every six couples suffers from infertility, making it difficult to accept parenthood without medical help. What is more disturbing is that just 1% of the 2.8-3 crore Indian couples suffering from infertility seek medical care, adding to the burden of the illness.

Lack of awareness regarding the condition, high cost of treatment, lack of knowledge about accurate medical intervention, social stigma, and taboo are key factors that hinder couples from discussing infertility issues. Therefore, there is a need to normalize conversations around infertility by eradicating the taboo around infertility. This can be done through education and awareness programs.

Another significant obstacle is the expense of medical treatment. Thus, making therapy cheaper is a pressing requirement to make it accessible to couples from all socioeconomic backgrounds. Also, proper pricing and packages as per the needs of the patients can help couples from all socioeconomic backgrounds plan their reproductive journey.

This can be ensured by enhancing treatment options, which can have higher success rates. Furthermore, this, in turn, can reduce the overall cost of medical treatment for the couple.

In India, between 2,50,000 and 3,00,000 IVF procedures are performed each year. Time-lapse monitoring, extensive genetic screening, and embryo scoping have all helped to enhance IVF success rates while also making the process safer and more efficient.
