US health officials reported a fourth death and several more cases of vision loss due to infections caused by drug-resistant bacteria in eyedrops. According to the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the bacteria have infected 81 individuals, of whom four have died. Overall, 14 individuals have reported loss of vision.

The CDC also stated that four individuals had surgery to remove an eyeball as a result of the infection. The epidemic is especially concerning since the bacteria responsible for it, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, is resistant to common medications.

According to the investigators, the majority of the patients had used certain brands of eyedrops, namely from EzriCare and Delsam Pharma, which were recalled in February. At least seven individuals were diagnosed with eye infections following the recall.

Following the recall, US health inspectors visited the factory in India that manufactured the eyedrops and discovered flaws in how the drops were manufactured and tested, including insufficient sterility precautions.
