To treat children with eye cancer, the All India Institute of Medical Science (AIIMS) has begun to deliver plaque radiation using a device built in India. The device developed at the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) in Mumbai is the first paediatric plaque that has been given to AIIMS Delhi free of charge.

Recently, AIIMS cooperated with the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre in Mumbai to develop the first made-in-India retinoblastoma plaque, specifically for paediatric patients. Dr. Bhavana Chawla, professor of ophthalmology at AIIMS, explained that when the eye needs to be saved and the tumour requires radiation, a radioactive plaque can be placed at the top of the eye to kill the cancer cells. However, this method is required when all other treatments, including chemotherapy, fail.

In 2017, AIIMS began plaque radiotherapy. This treatment employs high-energy X-rays or particles to attack cancer cells. Around 35–40 children are diagnosed with retinoblastoma at AIIMS every month.

Retinoblastoma is a hereditary illness associated with the RB1 gene in India. Recent research at AIIMS, however, has discovered that more genes cause retinoblastoma. According to the findings, only 40% of patients contain a mutation in the RB1 gene.
