According to a study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association Network Open, cases of chronic pain in the US grew at a much faster rate than other persistent conditions from 2019 to 2020. The researchers revealed that more than 20% of Americans, i.e., more than 75 million people, suffer from chronic pain.

However, only 7 in 1000 individuals are diagnosed with diabetes each year, while approximately 16 people in 1,000 have depression and 46 have hypertension. In a survey of around 10,000 US citizens, the researchers inquired about their pain levels in 2019 and again in 2020.

The findings of the survey showed that 60% of the respondents who suffered chronic pain in 2019 were still suffering it a year later. It also revealed that 52 people out of every 1,000 respondents reported suffering from chronic discomfort each year.

The lead author of the study noted that the fact that more than 50 out of 1,000 people developed chronic pain in 2019–20 should concern us, particularly when compared to the development of other chronic diseases such as depression, which affects 16 out of 1,000 people.
