A new study published in JAMA Network Open stated that COVID-19 boosters do not raise the risk of miscarriage.

To understand if a booster in early pregnancy, before 20 weeks, was related to a higher risk of spontaneous abortion, researchers carried out the study. They investigated over 100,000 pregnancies aged 6 to 19 weeks from eight health systems in the Vaccine Safety Datalink (VSD). The VSD is cooperation between the CDCs Immunization Safety Office and significant health care systems.

The "observational, case-control, surveillance study" lasted from November 1, 2021, through June 12, 2022. They discovered that having a COVID-19 booster injection during a 28-day or 42-day exposure window did not enhance the risk of miscarriage.

COVID infection during pregnancy increases the chance of poor outcomes. Yet, due to safety concerns, many pregnant women or those planning to become pregnant are unwilling to obtain a booster dosage.

Several studies have also revealed that COVID-19 might be more severe during pregnancy and contribute to poor maternal outcomes. Previous research has demonstrated that COVID-19 primary immunization is safe during pregnancy and is not connected with an increased risk of miscarriage, according to experts.

The outcomes of the current study confirm the safety of COVID-19 booster immunization in early pregnancy.
