Plastic surgeons at Sanjay Gandhi, Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences, successfully performed pilonidal sinus laser surgery in a nursery setting. The pilonidal sinus is a tiny hole or tube in the skin towards the top of the posterior that splits. Pus development and discharge around the anus are symptoms of pilonidal sinus illness. Though prevalent, it is challenging to cure and frequently results in recurrence.

The earliest mention of this condition is of late-nineteenth-century US troops who were diagnosed with pilonidal sickness during the wars, and it was so dubbed "Jeep disease."

It primarily affects males with excessive hair growth on the behind, and the condition affects 26 people every 1 lakh people.

According to Prof Rajeev Agarwal, head of plastic surgery at SGPGI, the source of pilonidal sinus is assumed to be trapped hair follicles, and patients typically complain of a tiny hole around the top portion of the cheeks with drainage of fluid or pus. It may also be connected with discomfort if fluid accumulation or infection occurs. Family history, being overweight or obese, trauma or irritation, sedentary work or lifestyle, hirsute habitus, and poor hygiene are also risk factors.

He emphasized that the traditional procedure needed surgical intervention, followed by routine steps such as abscess care. In comparison, plastic doctors employed a less invasive laser method to relieve the patient.

Dr. Agarwal went on to say that when the sinus is excised, the region is treated with a single beam of carbon dioxide laser, which aids in eliminating the whole sinus tract. The main advantages were freedom from pain, cuts, and sutures, and the risk of blood loss, as well as no hospitalization, rapid healing, no recurrence of cysts, and a low risk of infection.
