In a study published in the journal Stroke and Vascular Neurology, researchers from the University of Gothenburg showed that regular physical activity and exercise can reduce bleeding in people suffering from intracerebral hemorrhage.

Intracerebral hemorrhage is the most serious kind of stroke and can result in life-threatening circumstances. The risk of serious consequences from hemorrhage increases with the amount of bleeding.

The study emphasized the importance of physical activity for brain protection. In the study, the researchers enrolled 686 people who were treated for intracerebral hemorrhage at Sahlgrenska University Hospital in Gothenburg between the periods of 2014 and 2019.

The findings of the retrospective analysis showed that people who were physically active on a regular basis had fewer hemorrhage than those who were found to be idle. The researchers defined physically active as engaging in at least light physical activity, such as walking, cycling, swimming, gardening, or dancing, for at least four hours weekly.

The study author noted that the findings of the study were significant regardless of their location within the cerebrum. The researchers discovered that physically active people had less bleeding in deep areas of the brain, which are associated with high blood pressure, and surface regions, which are linked to age-related disorders like dementia.
