According to a study published in the journal Mayo Clinic Proceedings: Digital Health, 20%, or 1 in 5 adults who are considered healthy by medical standards, have a glucose metabolism similar to that of those with prediabetes.

These healthy individuals were detected using a new method of analysis created by experts at Klick Health, a life sciences business located in the United States, that detects impaired glucose homeostasis (IGH), a precursor to prediabetes. In the study, a total of 384 people were equipped with a continuous glucose monitor and assessed by a physician over a two-week period.

The physicians assessed the participants and classified them into diabetic, pre-diabetic, or healthy groups according to guidelines issued by the American Diabetes Association. These participants were further classified into two groups based on their glucose homeostasis parameters, namely effective or impaired, after applying the mathematical model.

Based on the fact that it is possible to reverse diabetes, or at least slow its progression, there is growing demand for screening tools that can flag at-risk individuals. Screening and monitoring entail assessing risk factors such as age, BMI, and family history, whereas diagnosis is mostly based on blood tests such as glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) and the oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT).
