In the last two months, at least 40 medical institutions around the country have lost accreditation, purportedly for failing to meet National Medical Commission (NMC) criteria. According to a media report, around 100 other medical schools may face similar proceedings.

The agency revealed that the institutions that may lose their accreditation are located in Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Assam, Punjab, Andhra Pradesh, Puducherry, and West Bengal. The agency stated that several medical colleges in the country were found to violate the established standards.

During the examination, NMC discovered flaws in Aadhaar-linked biometric attendance methods, CCTV cameras, and faculty rolls. Minister of State for Health, Mrs. Bharati Pravin Pawar, stated in the Rajya Sabha that there was an increase of 69% in the number of medical colleges, from 387 before 2014 to 654 in 2023. In the last decade, the number of MBBS seats has expanded by 94%. Furthermore, the number of PG seats has increased by 107%, from 31,185 in 2014 to 64,559 in 2023.

The Minister of State for Health stated that the government has created additional medical colleges and expanded medical seats to address the countrys doctor shortage and thereby improve the medical system.
