A recent study from the University of East Anglia showed that those who consume large amounts of alcohol risk losing muscle mass as they age. The biggest decrease in muscle mass occurred in people who drank 10 or more units of alcohol per day, which could result in weakness in middle life.

Researchers evaluated 200,000 individuals between the ages of 37 and 73 from the UK Biobank, which has health records for 500,000 UK residents. Most of the subjects were in their 50s and 60s and were of middle age. The team effectively recorded drinking behaviors due to the huge sample size.

Dr. Abhinav Kumar, Associate Consultant, Gastroenterology & Hepatobiliary Sciences, Fortis Escorts, Okhla, New Delhi, stated that alcohol influences protein synthesis, which speeds up the degeneration of skeletal and cardiac muscles, suggesting that it has a direct harmful effect on both of these muscle types.

Previous studies have shown that consistent alcohol consumption can lower the amount of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) produced in the body.

To rebuild the lost muscles in the body, improving nutrition is the top objective, focusing on consuming more protein in the diet, exercising regularly, and adopting healthy lifestyle habits, getting enough rest, and restricting alcohol consumption to one glass per day.
