ABP News Bureau    03 June 2023

In response to accusations that the Baddi Area has developed into a production center for fake medications passing for food supplements, the NHRC sent notifications to the Union Health Ministry, FSSAI, and the DCGI.

Nutraceutical companies reportedly use the Baddi Industrial area of Solan in Himachal Pradesh as a production hub for counterfeit vitamins, syrups, and pharmaceuticals that are marketed as dietary supplements. Companies take advantage of the absence of coordination between government ministries. In response, the NHRC complained to the DCGI, FSSAI, and Union Health Ministry.

Three of the five nutraceutical companies shut down by the NHRC in Himachal Pradesh in 2023 had licenses to manufacture food. Moreover, they are not permitted by law to manufacture allopathic medications. Until 2006, the Food Safety and Standards Act governed all nutraceutical businesses by the Prevention of Food Adulteration Act of 1954, and the States Food Safety Department had the authority to test samples, carry out investigations, and grant licenses.

But after it was enacted, the central authorities received all the powers. The FSSAI, a division of the Union Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, gives licenses to these companies.

The DCA also closed down an illegal facility in Baddi, Solan district, after recovering over 54,000 fake capsules and pills.
