Using data from the UK Biobank, a new study assessed the association between individual and combination healthy lifestyle traits and the risk of all-cause and cause-specific death among 1,04,142 osteoarthritis patients.

Based on each persons body mass index (BMI) and self-reported food, sleep length, physical activity, sedentary time, social connection, smoking, and alcohol consumption — all known to be linked to health — the researchers assigned each person a score for their lifestyle.

After the first two years of follow-up, 9,915 fatalities were recorded. Different correlations between peoples lifestyles and mortality were shown through models. BMI and vigorous exercise had a J-shaped relationship, while moderate physical activity and sleep duration had an L-shaped link. This pattern indicates a tendency that begins with a fast decline and then quickly rises.

The recommended amount of sleep per night is 7 hours, whereas the turning point for moderate physical activity was 550 minutes per week, and for intense physical activity was 240 minutes per week. 28 kg/m2 marked the J-shaped turning point for BMI.

Each lifestyle risk was found to be strongly related to mortality from all causes as well as mortality from cancer, cardiovascular, digestive, and respiratory disorders in multivariable models.

Finding a healthy lifestyle pattern that dramatically lowers the risk of mortality in patients with osteoarthritis may be one of the key takeaways from this study.

In fact, the European Alliance of Associations for Rheumatology (EULAR) has also released guidelines on work participation and lifestyle choices to stop the advancement of rheumatic and musculoskeletal disorders, including osteoarthritis.
