The health officials at Meerut stated that the Lala Lajpat Rai Memorial (LLRM) Memorial Medical College in Meerut, which has been designated a model treatment facility under the National Viral Hepatitis Control Program, has so far recorded 15,000 cases of hepatitis C.

The number is growing daily, according to DR RC Gupta, principal of LLRM. A 60–70% infection rate has been recorded in the Syana block of Bulandshahr and the Garh block of Meerut.

Dr. Gupta stated that contact with the blood of an infected individual is typically how the virus spreads. He claimed that a study carried out by a group of experts in rural areas found that one reason for the infection is barbers repeatedly using a shaving blade on several customers.

Lack of awareness, says Arvind Kumar, MD (medicine) at LLRM, is another factor contributing to the rise in instances. So that we can identify the hepatitis C virus inside the body in its early stages and treat it appropriately, they have asked the doctors of the primary health center and community health center to guarantee proper screening for the disease is done.
