Dr. K. Mohanan, Vice-Chancellor (V-C) of Kerala University of Health Sciences (KUHS), has convened a meeting of the principals of four private medical colleges in the state after the National Medical Commission (NMC) refused to renew the undergraduate courses offered by these colleges.

On Tuesday, the meeting will take place online. The V-C called it after the Governor, Mr. Arif Mohammed Khan, the Chancellor of KUHS, directed him to intercede and consult with the NMC on behalf of the medical colleges.

The state is set to lose 450 MBBS seats this academic year, as the NMC has issued notices to several medical colleges in the state, including Jubilee Mission Medical College in Thrissur, Gokulam Medical College in Thiruvananthapuram, and others, denying the continuation of recognition for MBBS courses run by these institutions.

The decision of the NMC came after a physical investigation of these institutions, which revealed issues such as a deficit of professors, a shortage of residents, insufficient patient inflow, and questionable test administration.

Dr. Mohanan stated that the meeting on Tuesday will address what individual institutions can do to appeal to the NMC to regain recognition. The KUHS will write to the NMC directly on behalf of the institutions, requesting a quick hearing with the NMC so that MBBS admissions this year will not be hampered.
