The Centre has established a Medical Assessment and Regulatory Board (MARB) to handle proposals for new medical colleges, increase seats in existing medical colleges, and even raise the number of students enrolled in a course or institution.

The new notice stipulated that no medical college or medical institution can be founded, nor can new courses be initiated, unless the MARB grants written authorization in response to an application made in that respect.

The central notice also directed the MARB to conduct assessments and ratings of all medical institutions and to have all such authorities carry out tasks under the Act. The notice added that the MARB can appoint one or more independent third-party agencies to carry out the assessment and rating of medical institutions on its behalf.

The new notice came after a series of initiatives were taken by the Union government to improve medical education in the country.
