A recent study published in the Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine found that musculoskeletal disorders like golfers elbow, tennis elbow, carpal tunnel syndrome, and rotator cuff tendinitis are much more common in people with greater cardiovascular disease risks.

Data from a nine-year prospective cohort of 1,224 workers from diverse industries in three states were used in the study. At the start of the trial, baseline information was gathered from interviews, physical examinations, anthropometric measurements, and nerve conduction experiments. Subsequent monthly follow-ups were used to monitor the emergence of symptoms of musculoskeletal diseases.

The researchers used a technique based on the Framingham Heart Study model, commonly used to determine a persons 10-year risk for cardiovascular disease. Scientists related the development of musculoskeletal disorders to cardiovascular disease risk. They adjusted their analyses for various variables, including body mass index and the physical demands of the participants professions that might impact the outcomes.

The results imply that musculoskeletal diseases can arise due to poor cardiovascular health. It elucidated that Participants with a cardiovascular disease risk of 15% or higher were four times more likely to have one or more musculoskeletal disorders than participants with a low risk of cardiovascular disease compared to people at minimal risk of cardiovascular disease and had a 17 times higher risk of acquiring four or more musculoskeletal disorders.

The results are consistent with mounting evidence that systemic risk factors play a role in the emergence of musculoskeletal illnesses. It emphasizes the need for people to adopt healthy behaviors to avoid contracting diseases that could shorten their lives.
