A 27-year-old woman, Lovika, from the Panipat region of Haryana, was paralyzed on both sides of her body due to hyper-acute Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS) in November last year.

After spending more than five months on a ventilator, she left Indraprastha Apollo Hospital in a wheelchair. Her capacity to move her body has mostly returned, and she will soon be able to walk.

Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS) is a condition where the persons own immune system assaults the peripheral nerves.

According to Dr. PN Renjen, senior consultant in neurology at Apollo Hospitals, the patient recovers well with proper care. She also experienced muscle weakness on both sides of her body, facial palsy, bulbar paralysis, and breathing difficulties.

Dr. Renjen further suggested that a thorough and multidisciplinary approach is necessary for treating GBS, and a patient should not overlook any numbness, tingling, or weakness followed by viral fever. With the support of her family and prompt medical treatment, Lovika recovered well.
